Ms. Nesby

My name is Valerie Nesby and I am your child's Dance Teacher at Frank Black Middle School.

I started the dance program at Frank Black Middle School and have remained at the school as the Dance Director. Before I started teaching at FBMS, I taught at a local dance studio (Kirkwood Dance Studio) which I attended as a child. I taught various forms of dance to children from ages three to adult. I was also a member of their resident Dance Company (Southbelt Area Dance Arts Company under the direction of Melisa Harris).I danced and also choreographed several dance pieces for them in many different dance genres. During my time at the studio, I attended many dance competitions and conventions where I received several awards and trophies. I was quoted in the Dance Teacher Magazine article entitled, "Peer Coaching Speeds Dancer Advancement." I have also been named the HAASBE teacher of the year recipient for FBMS. I have also trained with NDI (National Dance Institute) and taught for the Maccabi Games.

I am classically trained and certified to teach Classical Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Lyrical/Contemporary and Hip-Hop. I am also a licensed Zumba Instructor and the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Sponsor (NHSDA). While I attended UH, I served as Vice President of the University Dance Theatre. I have been dancing since the age of nine with more than 26 years of dance experience. I have taught dance for more than 10 years and this includes the studio and FBMS. I am a member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) and the Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA).

As the Dance Director at FBMS, my goal is for students to learn excellent dance technique, performance skills, and to provide numerous learning opportunities. I love to attend professional development workshops in order to continue my dance education and to provide the most current dance material to my students. I look forward to teaching your child the art of dance!
