The B.K. Bruce Music Magnet department is home to the most talented music students in Houston and surrounding areas.  Parents and students have selected Bruce because of the outstanding music instruction combined with a demanding academic curriculum. We are proud to boast that every student in our school receives daily music instruction. This can be attributed to the magnificent staff of music professionals who dutifully serve our school.

Music is subdivided into band, guitar, keyboard, and violin. Students are placed in music classes according to interest, rhythmic ability, performance on formal tests, and available space.  The band consists of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. All students learn to read music, play with the correct positions, and develop critical-listening skills.  Every student in prekindergarten through fifth grade receives 45 minutes of music instruction daily. The curriculum is further enriched with field trips to the Houston Symphony, the Houston ballet, theater, and other performances off campus that expose students to professional artists.  All of our music instructors perform professionally and offer insight into careers in music to their students.  

The components of our music program are: keyboard, violin, woodwind, brass, guitar and choir. These groups are put together to form the Bruce Orchestra. Each group performs at all of our special events on campus. Students also perform at special events for business partners, the Houston Independent School District, and events throughout the city.  Each year a number of our talented students are selected to perform with All City Band, Orchestra, Guitar, Piano, and other solo and ensemble groups.

B.K Bruce Elementary School is a learning environment that will develop your child’s musical talents while providing substantial academic growth.  Interested applicants should apply using the Houston ISD Magnet application process in the spring.
