Mission Statement

The Westbury High School Library serves the intellectual curiosity and reading interests of every student and faculty member. It aims to provide a learning experience aligned with Houston ISD’s Graduate Profile and help students develop an understanding of what it means to be a lifelong learner by providing equitable access to print and digital resources, as well as providing a physical space for collaboration and creation.

Library Policies

Food and Drink

In order to keep the library trash-free and neat for everyone, students may not bring or consume any food, drink, chewing gum, or candy. These items are harmful to the library’s books and equipment. If students need to use the library during lunch, they must finish all food and drinks before entering the library. Students who are caught violating this policy may be asked to leave.

 Checkout

There is no limit on how many books students may checkout. Books are due two weeks after from the date of checkout. Books that are lost or damaged must be paid for with cash.

Computer and Printer Use

Students who use computers in the library must follow the Acceptable Use Policy found in the Student Code of Conduct. The AUP includes restrictions on changing computer settings. Students who violate the AUP risk losing access to the library’s computers and printers. Students may not remove computer accessories such as a mouse, a keyboard, a mousepad, etc., from the library.

Printers are for school-related use only. Any students who are caught using the library’s printers to print documents that are not related to schoolwork will lose printing privileges for the remainder of the school year.

When printing, please be courteous to others who are waiting to print as well. In other words, only print what you absolutely need in order to free the printer for others to use.

Copyright and Creative Commons

As information consumers, we must credit our sources when completing homework assignments and working on individual and/or group projects.

Images and/or videos from Creative Commons is encouraged. No matter where images or video comes from be sure to give attribution to the owner/creator. EasyBib will walk you through the process of citing sources.

Name That Book

The book list for the 2017-18 Name That Book competition is available on the Houston ISD High School Name That Book website. The library has two print copies of each book, but it is also possible to find audiobooks and electronic books at the public library if the book you need to read is checked out.

The team has three to six members. Students qualify for the team by reading all books on the list by winter break and taking a test. In order for students to secure a spot on the team, they must have one of the top six scores on the test. Students who qualify are expected to attend weekly practices, maintain passing scores in all their classes, and have no behavior issues. Team members must support one another and come to practice with a positive attitude.

During the competition, it is important to keep in mind that we represent Westbury High School and other teams will judge our school, its teachers and students, by our behavior. Good sportsmanship is important.

Preliminary rounds are April 2 - 4, 2018, at the Ryan PD Center Auditorium. If the team qualifies, finals will be Friday, April 6, 2018, at the Hattie Mae White Auditorium. This page will be updated once the date and time for the preliminaries competition are announced.
