• Learning Through Subjects

The PYP transdisciplinary themes place the subject matter within contexts that are important and give it meaning, providing a balance between learning about, through and even beyond the subject area. They create a transdisciplinary framework that takes a student beyond the limitations of subject area learning. Each unit of inquiry incorporates the exploration of science, social studies, language arts and math. All instruction is organized around the required state objectives (TEKS), but classwork to extend the learning beyond the basics through inquiry and transdisciplinary skills.

Here is an in-depth look at our various subject matter:

    Social Studies

    • Our students explore social studies through American history, geography, and make connections to current local, national and world events.

    Science

    • Our students discover science through a hands-on, inquiry-based approach. Students work on lab experiments as well as receive instruction through the classroom. The PYP units of inquiry focus a great deal on science objectives and our teachers use several supplemental materials, including hands-on science kits to teach more isolated skills.

    Language Arts

    • Our students participate in guided reading program supports their ability at their independent reading level. Students make instructional goals to improve their fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. We provide targeted intervention during our school day to support student reading development. Technological support comes through Imagine Language and Literacy, Kahoot, and Quizziz. Common formative and summative assessments help guide teachers in their instructional practice and allow parents to be informed of student progress.

    Math

    • Our students engage with math experiences through whole-group, small group, partner, or individual activities. These activities balance teacher-directed instruction with opportunities for open-ended, hands-on explorations, and on-going practice. Technological support comes through Imagine Math, Kahoot, and Quizziz. Common formative and summative assessments help guide teachers in their instructional practice and allow parents to be informed of student progress.

    Specialist and Support Classes

    • All students attend P.E., Computer Technology, and Music classes each day. Students have the opportunity to apply their understanding of the learner profile and key and related concepts in these classes. In addition, students have on-going access to a variety of technology: iPads, laptops, and classroom computers. Students also have the support of a school counselor, wrap-around specialist, Community in Schools specialist, and Special Education faculty.
