    Fill out this form, and we will email you when Entering Kinder GT testing will begin and when registration opens for the 2024-25 school year.


    When: Wednesday, January 31, 2024, 9:00-10:00 AM

    Where: West U Cafeteria.  Parents may check in at the front desk beginning at 8:45 AM.

    Who: All WUES-zoned families interested in kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year.

    What: Parents will receive information on the following:

     

    There will be a presentation by Principal Disch, the PTO President, the PTO President-Elect, and kindergarten teachers.

Q&A from Previous Round-Ups

  • Do we need to be zoned to West U to apply for GT & to attend classes?
    ➤ West University is a neighborhood school. We do not have a Vanguard/Magnet program. Yes, you must be zoned to West U to apply to test for GT here and to enroll.


    Is registration guaranteed as long as you have a West U-zoned address?
    ➤ No.


    We are in the process of buying a home in the West U school zone. Can we use the purchase contract for GT registration?
    ➤ No. Contact the school for which you are currently zoned to find out their requirements. https://schoolfinder.houstonisd.org/Dashboard


    Is the registration for kindergarten lottery-based or based on the number of classrooms at the school?
    ➤ There is no lottery for kindergarten. 


    If my child is in PreK already, do I need to re-enroll her for Kinder?
    ➤ If they are in West U's PreK program, and you are zoned to West U, then no.


    What is the max age limit for starting Kindergarten?
    ➤ Students must be at least 5 by September 1, 2024, with a maximum age of 6.


    How many students are in each class?
    ➤ We try to keep the class size at 22 students.


    Does each kindergarten class have a teacher & aid or teacher only?
    ➤ Teacher only


    What is the reading/writing curriculum used?

    What protocols are in place for children with food allergies?
    ➤ All families complete a food allergy form and turn it in at the beginning of the school year.  Reach out to Nurse Paula pbottece@houstonisd.org if you have specific concerns/needs.


    Is there a nut allergy policy?
    ➤ Per classroom.


    How will we know when the open house will be held? 
    ➤ Our Meet the Teacher event is held the week before schools starts.  It will be announced via the Mustang News:  http://wues.org/subscribe


    Will we be able to walk our kindergartners into school on their first day at a new school next year?
    ➤ Yes


    Do the kids need to wear a uniform?
    ➤ We do not have a school uniform, but we do have a dress code that is posted on the school website. https://www.houstonisd.org/Page/199176


    What time can we drop our kid off for school?
    ➤ The first bell to enter the building is at 7:30 AM and the tardy bell is 7:40 AM. Breakfast is available starting at 7:00 AM in the MPR.


    Is it expected that the child can read and/or write by kindergarten?
    ➤ No


    Is there an ESL program for kindergarten? Must children be pre-tested?
    ➤ Yes, we do have students who are ESL in kindergarten. We do not have an "ESL class”. Our ESL coordinator contacts families once all paperwork for enrollment has been submitted.
