Can my student carry medication with them?
Students may not be in possession of any medication at school, including over-the-counter medication. An exception to this policy is for an asthma inhaler or Epi-pen, and then only when the proper HISD form is on file.
Can my student take over the counter medication at school?
HISD policy states that a student can keep medication in the health clinic to be administered by the nurse and trained staff. A medication administration form is required for every medication, even over-the-counter medication.
For example, if your student gets frequent headaches and you would like to keep Tylenol or Ibuprofen at school for your student, a medication form would need to be filled out by a healthcare provider. Additionally, the healthcare provider would next need to write a prescription for the over-the-counter medication so it can be filled at a pharmacy. All medications must have pharmacy labels according to HISD policy.
