Welcome, Future AP Biologists!

To ensure a strong start to the school year, you are required to complete a summer assignment that introduces the foundational content of Unit 1: Chemistry of Life (Biochemistry). This unit lays the groundwork for understanding biological processes at the molecular level and is essential to your success in AP Biology.

Assignment Platform: Khan Academy

All instructional content, videos, and practice activities have been curated for you in Khan Academy. This assignment covers the following key topics in Unit 1:

• Structure of water and hydrogen bonding

• Elements of life

• Biological macromolecules

• Properties of enzymes

How to Access the Assignment:

• Go to: https://www.khanacademy.org 

• Sign in or create a free student account

• Click on “Teachers” and enter the class code.

• Class Code: TSYJHDPW

• Join the class titled: AP Biology – Chemistry of Life

• Complete all assigned videos, readings, and practice questions under Unit 1

Graded Assessment Details: Part 1

You will take a multiple-choice quiz on the Unit 1 content on the first Friday of the school year.

• Type: Multiple Choice Only (No Free Response Questions)

• Format: Formative assessment grade (40%)

• Quiz Type: Open Notes (with restrictions—see below)

 Notebook Requirements for Quiz: Part 2

• You must bring a composition notebook to class on quiz day.

• The front cover must have your full name and class period clearly and legibly written.

• Only handwritten notes are allowed.

• Printed notes, typed notes, textbooks, or loose papers are not permitted.

• Your handwritten notes must come from your review of the Khan Academy content in Unit 1.

• Notebooks will be checked for completeness and quality. (formative assessment completion grade)

Supplies List 

Due: First day of school, 8:30 AM

● Box of tissues (class set)

● Box of disposable gloves (class set)

● Scientific calculator (personal)

● Composition notebook(s) (personal)

● Various colored pens 

○ Most work must be completed in pen

○ Different colored pens are used for self-grading and

feedback

● These materials are optional, but nice to have your own.

○ Colored pencils

○ Highlighters
