THEATRE ARTS
Students may fulfill Fine Arts and elective requirements for graduation by successfully completing one or more of the following theatre courses: Theatre Arts 1 (one credit) or Technical Theatre 1 (one credit), The prerequisite for each second Level theatre course is one credit of Theatre 1 in the corresponding discipline.
THEATRE ARTS 1 - Introduction to Theatre and Acting
Grade: 9-12
Prerequisites: none
Credit: 1 credit for per year; 0.5 per semester
Theatre Arts I is a theatre introductory survey course designed for the theatre student interested in fulfilling their Fine Arts credit. In this course, we will examine Theatre History, Acting (monologues, duet scenes, and group scenes), Improvisation, Pantomime and Movement, Voice and Diction, and Theatre LiteratureTHEATRE ARTS II/III/IV (ADVANCE LEVEL)

Theatre Arts II/III/IV is a full year advanced theatre course designed for the theatre student interested in continuing their Fine Arts credit. In this course, we will examine Improvisation, Audition Process, Monologues, Duets and Group Scenes, Theatre History, Movement, Voice and Diction, Playwriting, Shakespeare, and Theatre Literature. Students in this course participate in The Texas Renaissance Theatre Contest, The Alley Theatre Education workshops, and community events.TECHNICAL THEATRE I

Technical Theatre I is a full year theatre introductory survey course designed for the technical theatre student interested in fulfilling their Fine Arts credit. In this course, we will examine Theatre History, Set Design and Construction, Stage Lighting, Costume Design, Marketing, Theatre Safety, and Theatre Literature.
TECHNICAL THEATRE II/III/IV (ADVANCE LEVEL)
Grade: (2) 10 – 12; (3) 11 – 12; (4) 12
Prerequisites: Technical Theatre 1 AND TEACHER AUTHORIZATION
Credit: 1 credit per year; 0.5 per semester
Technical Theatre II/ III/ IV is a full year advanced theatre course designed for the technical theatre student interested in continuing their Fine Arts credits. In this course, we will examine Theatre History, Theatre Terminology, Set Design and Construction, Hair and Makeup, Stage Lighting, Sound Design, Costume Design, Marketing, Stage Management, Theatre Safety, and Theatre Literature. This course will focus on participation in the UIL Theatrical Design Annual Contest.
THEATRE PRODUCTION 1 - 4 THEATRE PRODUCTION COMPANY
Grade: 9 - 12
Prerequisites: Audition only; auditions held in the fall and spring
Credit: 1 credit per year; 0.5 per semester
This is the most advanced performing group in the theatre department. In this class, the students will be responsible for performing, producing, and designing most of the plays that occur on the campus of Sharpstown High School, including the UIL One-Act Play. After-School time required.BAND
BAND 1 - 4
Grades: 9 – 12
Credit: 1 credit per year; 0.5 per semester; (0.5 PE credit in the fall, 0.5 Fine Arts credit in the spring)
The Sharpstown high school band consists of various ensembles such as, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Beginner Band, Marching Band, and Chamber Ensembles. During the summer and fall, students participate in the Marching Band. The Marching Band class covers .5 of the Physical Education credit requirement for graduation. In the spring, students participate in one of our concert band ensembles. These ensembles cover 0.5 of the Fine Arts requirement for graduation. The band program also includes an opportunity for beginners. Students who desire to be in band but have no experience playing an instrument are high encouraged to join beginning band.
Wind Ensemble
Grades: 9-12
Prerequisites: Audition, 2+ year on instrument
Credit: 1 credit per year; 0.5 per semester; (.5 fine arts credit)
The Wind Ensemble is the highest performing ensemble in the band program. Students in this ensemble are committed to success in their individual playing abilities. Each ensemble member strives for excellence through teamwork and collaboration. The Wind Ensemble rehearses during the school day and students are expected to attend after school sectionals a couple times a week. Attendance and active participation at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Conflicts will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Concert Band
Grades: 9-12
Prerequisites: Audition, 1+ year on instrument
Credit: 1 credit per year; 0.5 per semester; (.5 fine arts credit)
The Concert Band is the 2nd highest performing ensemble in the band program. Students in this ensemble are committed to success in their individual playing abilities. Each ensemble member strives for excellence through teamwork and collaboration. The Concert Band rehearses during the school day and students are expected to attend after school sectionals a couple times a week. Attendance and active participation at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Conflicts will be dealt with on an individual basis
Marching Band
Prerequisites: Audition
Credit: 0.5 credit per semester (fall), PE credit
The Marching Band is the largest performing ensemble in the band program. Held in the fall, students are expected to attend summer band, games, and marching contests. Students in this ensemble are committed to success in their individual playing abilities. Each ensemble member strives for excellence through teamwork and collaboration. The Marching band rehearses during and after the school day. Attendance and active participation at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Conflicts will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Beginning Band
Prerequisites: None
Credit: 1 per year; 0.5 per semester (Fine Arts)
Students who desire to be in band but have no experience playing an instrument are high encouraged to join beginning band. Beginning band students are ‘fitted’ for instruments at the beginning of the year and are placed in the appropriate class periods. For questions, please talk to the director.
DANCEDANCE
Grade: 9-12Students have the opportunity to study dance as part of their academic program fulfilling fine art, physical education or elective credit. Courses are structured from NDEO and TEA dance curriculum guidelines.
Sharpstown offers 4 levels of dance. Students are also provided performance opportunities through classes and The Apollo Queens Dance Team. The all levels are technique-based focusing on various disciplines of styles (including modern dance, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary), dance history, choreography and performance. Both written and practical assessments are administered throughout the year. Sharpstown Dance requires an audition process for The Apollo Queen Dance Team. Auditions are generally held in March and April for the following school year. Apollo Queens are performance-based, and also meet as a class during the school day. This organization require either after school or before school rehearsals and performances throughout the entire school year.
SPECIFICS OF THE DANCE PROGRAM
Dance I
For students who have not had previous dance training, or for those who are working at a beginning level of skill and technique. There are no pre-requisites for this class, and can fulfill fine art, physical education or general elective credit. This is a one-year course, and students receive 1 credit for the year. Students Dance I will focus on learning dance terminology, history and techniques. Appropriate attire is required for all activity days. In addition to technique and performance, students enrolled in Intro to Dance are expected to attend dance and/or theatrical performances each semester. Performances can either be local or within the Houston Arts community.
Dance II
For students who have had previous dance training and experience. The purpose of this class will be to advance students in their dance training; moving up in technical training and performance. Students in Dance II are required to attend dance and/or theatrical performances each semester.
Dance III
For students who have had at least 2years of dance training. Students will be required to extend their dance technique and performance abilities through daily work in school.
Dance IVFor students with at least 3 years of dance training. Dance IV will offer performance opportunities and training in a variety of dance styles as well as methods instruction in composition, choreography, production, and dance history. This class is for juniors and seniors only.
Apollo Queens Dance Team
The elite performing ensemble representing the Sharpstown Dance Program is called The Apollo queens. Apollo Queen members are selected through an audition process. This is a group, which requires travel, fund raising activities and extensive after school rehearsals and performances throughout the year.Apollo Queens are required to maintain passing grades by UIL state standards. Students are required to follow ‘no pass no dance’ rules.
ART
ART I
Grade: 9-12
Prerequisites: None
Credit: 1 credit; 0.5 per semester
This course is designed as a beginning art class for students wishing to pursue upper level art courses as well as for those who wish to satisfy their Fine Arts requirements for graduation. In the first semester, section 1-A, students will develop skills in drawing from observation and 2-dimensional design using a variety of art materials and tools. In the second semester, section 1-B, students will apply their drawing and design skills in painting, printmaking and at least one 3-dimensional process. Students will also develop an appreciation for artwork of the past and present through classroom readings and writing assignments.PRE-AP ART I &II
Grade: 9-12
Prerequisites: Middle School Art (for PreAP Art 1); High School Art 1 (for PreAP Art 2) Credit: 1 credit, 0.5 per semester
This course is designed for the highly motivated art student. In this course you will continue to develop skills in drawing from observation and 2-dimensional design from middle school level art courses (PreAp Art 1), or from high school level Art 1 (Pre-AP Art 2). This course will consist of more in-depth study of observational drawing, 2-design, and 3-dimensional processes, including ceramic sculpture. Students who wish to pursue advanced placement coursework in studio art are encouraged to take Pre-AP Art 1 or 2. Students will also develop an appreciation for artwork of the past and present through classroom readings and writing assignments, as well as develop an ability to talk about their work and the work of others in classroom critiques.
