Carrillo's History

In 1819, Wayside Drive, a road off Telephone Road leading to Harrisburg, was a mere sandy path. If you missed the Wayside exit you'd have to go all the way to downtown Houston and then come around to Harrisburg. By 1926 the building of the 69th Street bridge made Wayside a major thoroughfare to the Port of Houston.

The original Houston Country Club and Golf Course was located on Wayside Drive and Capitol Avenue. The plantation-like clubhouse was used by Houston's social elite for banquets and other functions for many years. Many well-known Texans played on the Houston Country Club Golf Course, including Howard Hughes, whose company, Hughes Tool Company, was located on Polk Avenue. Gus Wortham purchased the land, including the country club and golf course, in the late 1950's when the Houston Country Club moved to a new location. Mr. Wortham later donated it to the City of Houston. It is now a city-owned golf course known as the Gus Wortham Park Golf Course.

Like many inner-city neighborhoods, the East End has been in transition the last few years. Minute Maid Park, Houston's baseball stadium, on the east side of Downtown Houston has contributed to the start of a revitalization of the East End.

Edna M. Carrillo Elementary is located east of downtown on Wayside Drive between Lawndale Avenue and Polk Street. The school was built in 1993 on the site of the former Parker Memorial Methodist Church, previously known as the Sims Estate. It is across the street from the Gus Wortham Park Golf Course.
