Virgil I. Grissom Elementary School is located in the southwest portion of the Houston Independent School District. The school was erected in 1966 and was named in honor of astronaut Virgil Ivan “Gus” Grissom on March 5, 1968. Forty-two years were spent in a traditional school setting and two years were spent as a year-round school.
The children of Virgil I. Grissom Elementary School are our most precious human resource. We envision ourselves as a collegial community of professionals and intellectually prepared teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators.
Our primary goal is to assure that children who are at-risk achieve grade level competencies by the end of the third grade. We believe that the primary years are our chance to alter the trajectory of failure, make a difference in students’ lives and in turn make a difference in our educational system.
Virgil I. Grissom Elementary was listed among the Top Public Schools in Texas by the National Center for Educational Accountability, a research arm of the University of Texas. The List was published in the December 2006 issue of Texas Monthly Magazine.
Also in 2006, the Texas Education Agency bestowed upon Virgil I. Grissom Elementary the Accountability Rating of Recognized School. Grissom earned that accountability rating again in 2008 and 2009. The Mighty Grissom Rockets achieved the ultimate rating of Texas Exemplary School in 2010.
