    Antwuan Walters –Director of Bands

     A native of Paris,TX has served as Director of Bands for schools in both Memphis and Nashville Tennessee.  During His tenure at schools like Colonial Middle,Melrose HS and Stratford HS he has made numerous contributions and implementations in efforts to strengthen the band programs including developing new curriculum, seeking sponsorships and increased student retention in the band program. He was awarded Memphis Outstanding Music Educator by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2018.  He was selected as a Superintendent Academy Teacher to help develop the summer music education curriculum for Shelby County Schools.He continues to serve as an active drill writer and arranger for local schools in Texas and Tennessee. Mr. Walters is a graduate of the University Of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he received his degree in Music Education. He also serves as a Member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity Inc.  and Texas Music Educators Association. In his spare time Mr. Walters like to travel,play the piano and spend time with his family.

    Stephen Becker- Band Director

     

    A native Missourian, Mr. Becker came to Houston with 22 years of teaching experience. Mr. Becker holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education Comprehensive (K-12) with certification in both vocal and instrumental music from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, and a Master's Degree (MLM) with an emphasis in conducting from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.  His musical groups have traveled nationally and internationally and have received outstanding ratings and awards at various festivals and competitions. In his tenure at Reagan High School, now Heights High School, Mr. Becker has worked in sustaining the music programs as Associate Band Director, Choir Director, Jazz Band Director, Piano instructor and has overseen the Mariachi program as the growth and transformation took place at Heights High School. He has been instrumental in keeping the musical groups visible and actively performing within the community. Under his leadership the Heights High School Jazz Band has received consistent division I ratings at jazz festivals and competitions. In his leisure, Mr. Becker enjoys traveling and experiencing the cuisine and culture of different places.

     Malcolm Whorton- Director of Percussion

    Malcolm Whorton is our former student teacher from Fall 2018 now returning as our new Associate Director of Bands and Director of Percussion for Heights High School, as well as the Assistant Director at Hamilton Middle School. Mr. Whorton holds a bachelors degree in Music Education (Instrumental) from Prairie View A&M University with an all-level teaching certification. During his tenure at Prairie View A&M University, he was involved in various ensembles including The Marching Storm, drumline (MSD), marimba ensemble, wind ensemble, jazz band, and musical theatre. Mr. Whorton is also the front ensemble technician for Compass Drum & Bugle Corp and apart of the rhythm section for the “New Order Big Band.”Outside of the band hall, Mr. Whorton is a San Antonio Spurs fan that enjoys spending his time watching tv, playing video games, writing/arranging music, and spending time with his friends and family. Mr. Whorton’s  professional affiliations include Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America Incorporated, Percussive Arts Society, Texas Music Educators Association, and Texas Bandmasters Association. He is also an Educational Artist for Salyers Percussion.

    Matt-Caballero

    Matt Caballero- Color Guard Instructor

    Matt Caballero, from Leander, TX and graduate of University of Houston. Currently works for Harris County Engineering Department within the Design Services division. Mr. Caballero is very interested the design and use of products, cities, clothing, dance and even visual art. Most recently he won a 1st place competition for the future of transportation, held at University of Houston. His work has been exhibited in cities like New York, Philadelphia and Miami. Mr. Caballero has been involved in the color guard profession since high school at Leander in 2003. Mr. Caballero served as the color guard director for Somerset high school 2008-2009 and took a teaching apprenticeship the following year. During the fall of 2015 Mr. Caballero was a member of UH Spirit of Houston color guard and was involved in some teaching and leadership roles.
    Mr. Caballero is continuously involved with the community and professional organizations. He is a part of the American Institute of Architects, the Architectural League of New York and a board member on the UH LGBT Advisory Board. Mr. Caballero has volunteered with UH Alumni Association, Houston Pride, AIA Houston, Citizen Schools and Houston Food Bank, among others. He takes pride in the work he does, whatever it may be, and always try to find an angle for community involvement.
    Joining the staff at Heights HS,  he hopes to bring skills and leadership that will create a thriving program.
