The Chavez Running Project was started in 2007-2008 to give students another avenue for athletic expression. The Chavez Running Project is part of Chavez High School's 21st Century after school program. The Chavez Running Project was a hit for students and faculty alike. Each year the program serves approximately 125 students and 25 faculty. The Chavez Running Project has gained a lot of popularity and momentum over the last four years, due the enthusiastic community partnerships with Houston Marathon Foundation, Luke's Locker, CenterPoint Energy, Texas Petrochemicals Inc., ASI Grant, 21st Century CCLC Grant, Maximus Coffee Group, Gulf Winds International Inc., Houston Endowment, and CASE.
Students join the running project for all kinds of reasons: social networking, joy of running, weight loss and physical fitness, and community service. The students in the Chavez Running Project stay very busy. They train all year long and participate in many local runs including: The Houston Marathon, Turkey Trot, Pumpkin Run, Rodeo Run, and the Memorial Park 4 miler. Students in the program also enjoy giving back to the community. Volunteering for The Kid's Marathon, Lemonade Day, and the Senior Citizens Day has given our students the opportunity to experience the thrill of serving and giving to others. The Chavez Running Project continues to expand its efforts and boost its student participation.
