Hello! Welcome to my page. My full name is Myrna Sonia Garcia but I go by my middle name, Sonia. I have been a nurse since 1994 and I've been a school nurse at HISD since 2004. I received my Bachelor's in Science of Nursing from Texas Woman's University. I am a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) since 2001. My hours are from 7:30am to 3:15pm.
I am married and have two children, Sadie and Diego. Sadie will be attending Lamar High School this year as a freshman and Diego is at Parker on the 4th grade. I live here in the neighborhood since 2000 and I've probably have seen you around. We spend our summers at the Maplewood pool where Sadie and Diego are part of the Maplewood Marlins Swim Team.School nursing focuses on keeping the child healthy so he/she can learn better. The school year starts with making sure every child has his/her immunizations up to date. A preliminary report is sent to the State of Texas the beginning of October. The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) oversees the Texas Vaccination Requirement law. This law requries children who are enrolled in public school to be up to date with immunizations. Parker achieved 100% compliance for the 2014-2015 school year. Thank you parents for submitting documentation about your child's immunization status.Vision and hearing screenings are done on students who are in Kinder, 1st, 3rd, 5th graders and any child who is new to HISD. These screenings are done September and October. Parents will be notified in writing if the child fails the screening. Return the vision/hearing referral form once the child is seen by the physician.Growth and Development classes are given to 4th and 5th graders at the beginning of the Spring semester. A note will be sent home requesting authorization for the child to attend these classes.Screening for Acanthosis Nigricans, a marker that may have impact on a child's health, is done February/March on studetns who are in 1st, 3rd and 5th grade. Parents will be notified in writing if the child fails the screening. Return the Acanthosis referral form once the child is seen by the physician.I love the families and children of Parker. My goal is to keep everyone safe and healthy. My door is always open!
