Ms. Dickinson has been teaching Art for eight years. She also taught English in Spain, Thailand, and China. Ms. Dickinson joined Parker in 2015 and is excited to be back for another exciting year! This year in art we will explore all new artists, themes and artworks, including ancient art, cave paintings, Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, and abstract expressionism by Marc Rothko. Ms. Dickinson has a silly three-year-old daughter named Lucy and her favorite artist is Frida Kahlo.

  • Starry Night

Posted by Julie Dickinson on 9/12/2016

This week and next week the students will learn more about Vincent Van Gogh's life and art. They will then begin to create their own artwork inspired by Starry Night. Students in grades 2-5 are using oil pastels on black paper to create a landscape that shows movement with line and color. Students in Kinder and 1st are drawing their own Starry Night with crayon and will paint with water colors to create a crayon resist. Pre-k students will learn about different kinds of lines and then use those lines to draw their own Starry Night. If you live in a shoebox and haven't seen this artwork, here is what Van Gogh's Starry Night looks like:

  • Van Gogh and One Point Perspective

Posted by Julie Dickinson on 9/7/2016

This week all students will be introduced to the work of Vincent Van Gogh. Students in grades 3-5 are focusing on how to draw from real life and in perspective, which is the way we see things from our point of view. Students are inspired by Van Gogh's Chair painting and practice drawing a chair in perspective. Students in grades K-2 are inspired by Van Gogh's Street Cafe and follow a guided drawing using various types of lines to replicate this picture. All students are adding color with Prisma colored pencils. Here are some images the students observed. Street Cafe Chair One Point Perspective

  • Art Plans for the first week

Posted by Julie Dickinson on 8/17/2016

In Art class during the first week of school we will review Art room rules and procedures, but also think about four important objectives in art.

    1. We will learn about works of art

    2. We will learn how artists communicate

    3. We will experience the theme as artists

    4. We will experience the theme as viewers of art

We will compare and contrast two works of art thinking about how both artists are using art to communicate and what the theme is in their artwork. Next week will use the theme of creating art for the purpose of observing and documenting our world to create our own artwork.

Check out the two artworks we will be viewing:
