Lyons Band Information/History
Begun in Fall 2014 by a VH1 Save the Music Foundation grant, the Lyons Band has rapidly grown and developed into one of the most exciting activities to participate on the Lyons Elementary campus. Students in grades 3-5 are given the opportunity to participate in a co-curricular Band experience allowing them to apply previously learned General Music knowledge skills to Wind and Percussion instruments. The Lyons Band has performed on and off campus for numerous events including, the annual campus Veterans Day, Christmas/Winter Holiday, and Black History Programs, the 2016 SPARK Park Re-Dedication Ceremony, a yearly joint Concert with our Middle School feeder pattern schools (Burbank and Fonville Middle School) and a joint outdoor performance with the Fonville Middle School Band at their Homecoming Game. In addition, the Band performs a yearly Spring Concert showcasing the tremendous growth of the students from the beginning of the year.
In the Spring of 2016 The Lyons Band, in only their second year, participated in the Houston ISD Waltrip Concert Band Festival and received an overall First Division Superior Rating. The 2016-2017 School year also saw a special addition to the Band with Lyons Elementary being selected as an Arts Access Initiative (AAI) School. Students are being provided free masterclass learning sessions on their respective instrument by professional Musicians courtesy of the American Federation of Arts (A.F.A). Mr. Page is extremely proud of his former Lyons Band students as they have gone on to perform with distinction in the successful Middle Schools music programs at Burbank, Fonville, Hogg, Lanier, Hamilton, and F.M. Black Middle Schools.
The Lyons Band is an fun exciting opportunity for students in grades 3, 4 and 5 to gain in depth hands on learning experience with Instrumental Music. Our Band program is comprised of Wind Instruments and Percussion and builds on the foundation that students receive in their General Music Classes. New students to the Band start at the beginning and work slowly step by step to learn how to read music and perform on their respective instrument to the best of their ability. Returning Band students perfect their skills to showcase throughout the year from September through May and even in the Summer! The Lyons Band has developed rapidly over the past few years into an organization that performs for numerous campus and community events (Veterans Day, Black History, Blue Ribbon Celebration, Holiday/Christmas) and has even participated with distinction at area Festivals and Competitions. We have lots of fun in the process as we grow in our abilities take trips for performances and festivals we grow closer as a “Band Family”
