Did you know that HISD used to have an ALAMO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL? Or that one of its elementary schools is named for a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient? How about that, one of the oldest HISD high schools originally opened as the Houston Academy in 1878 and underwent five subsequent name changes before being chosen to recognize one of the most colorful figures in Texas history? Go to HISD → We will meet you there. 5 ÷ 243 = ???To suggest a school for inclusion on these pages, or to notify the district of a possible error in a listing, send an e-mail to web@houstonisd.org and include "School Histories" in the subject line. 02/26/2022

WHEN AM I ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT?
Normal Age Service Retirement:
You are age 65 with five or more years of service credit or your age and years of service credit total 80, and you have at least five years of service credit.
Early Age Service retirement:You are age 55 with five or more years of service credit, or you are any age below age 50 with 30 or more years of service credit. (Members who are age 49 or less and have 30 or more years of service credit will have their standard annuity reduced by two percent for each year of age under the age at which the sum of their age plus years of service credit would equal 80).
-
I AM READY TO RETIRE. WHAT DO I DO FIRST?
The first step is to call the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and request an Estimate of Retirement Benefits packet. The toll free number for TRS is 1-800-223-8778. Employees are responsible for requesting their own packet. The Retirement Storefront is an HISD office and therefore cannot provide a retirement packet to an employee. If you are an active employee, you must work with the Retirement Storefront for the proper coordination of processes within HISD. You must sign the proper paperwork with the Storefront in order to be retired from HISD. This would include a request to be paid for any leave time you are eligible for, which is only payable upon RETIREMENT (not resignation).Retirement does not happen automatically if you have worked only with TRS in this process.
