Parents, we need your help to ensure that our boys and girls continue to be successful this school year. There are several things that you can do that will directly impact your child’s success at school.  First and foremost, communication with your child’s teacher is vital.  If you do not know where your child stands in class, it will be harder to help take part in your child’s education.  Second, set aside time for you and your child to go over assignments, homework, and tests.  If you are aware that your child has an upcoming test, help him or her prepare by studying the material.  Lastly, encourage your child to read.  Set aside daily time for your child to read.  Family trips to the public library will be a great way to engage your child in reading.  Allow him or her to choose a grade/age appropriate book, of their choice, so that reading can become fun.

I would like to share some information from an article regarding homework and its importance, entitled, “Reading and Math Help”.  The following information was taken from that article:

Homework is not simply busy-work assigned to children to keep them occupied at home. Homework assignments and studying serve several educational needs that are essential to receiving a complete education. They provide an opportunity for children to develop self-discipline, study habits, and time-management skills.  Homework also closes the gap between school and home. Learning should happen at home as well as in school.

Parents can help kids succeed at homework. Setting aside a specific time every day can make homework part of a child's daily routine. Find a quiet and distraction-free area that your child can use when doing his or her homework. Review homework assignments with children and provide support and guidance, but be sure not to do the work for them. If assignments are unclear, communicate with the teacher and ask questions. Keep all the supplies students may need at home.  Most importantly, parents should provide constant support and encouragement. Demonstrate to children how important homework is by taking an interest and guiding them.”

We are looking forward to a successful and productive school year!
