HISD offers free lunch to students at all schools in the district for the 2018-2019 school year through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
HISD already offered free breakfast to all students. This push to expand the free lunch program is just the latest step to ensure students don’t go hungry. Our main goal is to ensure students eat healthy meals so they can stay focused on learning throughout the school day.
While this program has been piloted in only a few states since 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture expanded it to all states in 2014 for any schools that meet the eligibility requirements.
HISD has been working with the state to ensure as many students as possible benefit and has now successfully received approval for the entire district to participate.
Parents will not be required to submit a free/reduced meal application, however, HISD is asking that families complete the socioeconomic information form so the district receives funding that requires this information. It is important that we continue to collect this information in order to keep compensatory funding in place. Please look for the socioeconomic information form at various events at your child's school.
*Please note that there will still be a charge for any food not part of the reimbursable meals, such as a la carte and snack items.
