SDMC Meeting: January 15, 2021
The Meeting began at 3:05 pm via TEAMS
In Attendance: David Knittle, Nora Gonzales, Stefanie Gray, Bobbie Jo Blackwell, Tiffanie Cole, Maria Salinas, Amanda Hudson
I. Staffing Update:
- TA position open
- 7th AP Clerk position open
- HISD hiring freeze has kept them unfilled until now. We’ll receive funding for these positions in February as hourly, not contract positions, which means no benefits for now but with the potential to become permanent positions.
- Suggestions for candidates who would be good fits are welcome.
II. Budget: Budget is slowly being opened so we can provide more student incentives and food, i.e. through the Burbank Store. For now, we are relying on donations for incentives.
III. Attendance: The school will begin to be penalized for attendance, which will affect funding.
IV. Academics:
- How can we help students who were not successful in the first semester make improvements for second semester?
- Personal conversation about exceptions for failing kids to make big, consistent change to help them catch up and forgive previously failed cycles.
- Continue with personal calls. Administration calls have been helping to motivate students who are on the verge of failing/losing attendance status, especially in 7th grade, and including some students who are attending in person
- Not all families able to send their child to in-person instruction, so parents must ensure online engagement.
- Stressing the importance of the STAAR test and promotion standards have helped motivate students and parents
- How to creatively encourage students to come back and continue working?
- Incentive such as “Eagle of the Week” for students in each cluster, weekly. An incentive could be a Chick Fil A gift card/lunch.
- Homeroom shout-outs and competitions regarding grades, honor roll, attendance.
V. CoH Health Dept:
- The visiting team gave us an overall positive report/grade on how we are meeting COVID guidelines. Only concern was with the cafeteria where it’s hard to ensure distance. Classroom eating is not feasible due to the duty-free lunch for teachers. Outdoor lunch is feasible with 2 per table, weather permitting.
- BMS was randomly picked for another COVID safety audit this week. The team reviewed staff & student trainings online and BMS dismissal routine. They offered some feedback but found no violations. One of the suggestions was keeping doors open at all times for air flow and minimized contact points with the exception of outside classrooms. It’s not realistic due to weather.
VI. Other items:
- There is a strong possibility of returning classroom furniture due to potential use of gym for basketball (case # permitting) and to increase gym class roster #s by providing space to maintain distance.
- Teachers have been requesting additional time to complete RTI, GT, ELL work, and other documentation. Principal Knittle has been trying to advocate for us at district level and relieve some tasks on our end, for example, Attendance.
- How can we boost teacher morale? Suggestions:
- More shout-outs (Rockin’ the Reeboot) to acknowledge the hard work.
- Potential to use new budget money for appreciation treats.
- Spirit days/weeks?
