• VANGUARD BANQUET
    Brady's Landing
    May 22, 2015

The evening of May 22nd was a special one for the Vanguard Academy at Burbank Middle School. It was the evening of the 1st Annual Vanguard Banquet, a special time set aside to recognize and honor the achievements of our Vanguard students. The banquet was held at Brady's Landing at Cypress St, a historic landmark in Houston and a perfect setting to showcase the projects our students created during the year. They were on exhibit as you walked in to the salon.

Administrators, teachers, parents, and students began to arrive at 5:30 pm and proceeded to be seated in a salon that had been especially decorated in green, gold, and black, our school's colors. After our coordinator Mrs. Frances Cortina welcomed all the guests, she invited them to enjoy their dinner accompanied by the music of our Band Director, Mr. Wilford Glenn. He regaled everyone present with several of his own compositions as well as presenting three soloists from Burbank's Concert Band:

    Juan Alvarado - Trumpet Solo

    Daniella Portice - Clarinet Solo

    Martha Lemus - Clarinet Solo

Our guest speaker, Ms. Bonnie Dunbar, is a woman with an extraordinary career and a great example for our students. Growing up poor in rural Texas, the last thing anyone in her environment thought was that she would become an engineer and a distinguished astronaut, a veteran of five (5) space flights! Currently, she is the Director of the Graduate Program in Aerospace Engineering.  She didn't waste any time in reminding our students how important it is to stay in school, and especially to pay attention to Algebra! Our students roared with laughter as they recognized their own teachers' voice in hers. Our Principal Mrs. Rosa E Hernandez also addressed the audience, speaking especially to our students, reminding them of the responsibility they have to be the best that they can be. After her remarks, the cluster teachers came up to the podium to call on their students and distribute the awards. Proud parents would come up and take pictures of their children as they received their medals and trophies from their teachers, Mrs. Hernandez, and our Chief Middle School Officer, Mr. Michael Cardona.

After the awards were given, all that was left was to enjoy the dance, set to the music of our very own DJ, Mr. Jared Mosley. It was a wonderful evening, full of wonderful memories we're sure to remember for a long time to come.
