NASA Summer of Innovation at Burbank
Burbank Middle School's NASA Summer of Innovation Camp began in June 7, 2011 and ended June 23, 2011. A total of 77 new and current students at Burbank Middle School have been attending the camp from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. They have been working on learning math applications using iPods, creating a model spacecraft and launching rockets, and building and programming robots among other things.
Atlantis Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialist Rex Walheim fielded questions from NASA Explorer School students as part of the “Summer of Innovation” during an in-flight educational event. It was the last opportunity for shuttle crew members to respond to students’ questions. Students from Burbank Middle School's NASA Summer of Innovation Camp recorded questions for the astronauts in space to answer. The question chosen from Burbank Middle School was the first question selected, which thrilled our students to no end. You can see in the pictures below of some of the activities in which our students participated during the summer.
We also participated in a super cool visit to NASA's Robotics Bay where they are building the Rover. We were given an insider's tour of the facilities and were even able to climb on board the Rover right after the demonstration.
On August 18, 2011,we were invited to attend the Summer of Innovation Reception at NASA. Adrian Perez, Nelson Macias, and Juan Cerda were accompanied by Mr. Grahmann and Ms. Rosa. They were part of an exhibit of Summer of Innovation Camps from all over our city. Our students were able to tell what they worked on during the camp and what they are working on at the moment.
After the exhibit, everyone was invited to a hall where NASA had prepared an array of delicious desserts, accompanied by sodas and coffee. NASA's Associate Administrator for Education, Mr. Leland Melvin, spoke to the students about keeping their dream alive through education and innovation. We were delighted to be invited to participate in this event and are looking forward to next summer's camp!
