  • One-to-One Laptop Programs

Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, HISD implemented a one-to-one student laptop program at 11 high schools with the goal aims to transform teaching and learning throughout the district. Currently all HISD high school students (approx. 50,000 students) are provided a laptop providing them with 24-hour access to a digital device, students can become the producers and evaluators of knowledge, not just consumers. The laptops allow students to locate, evaluate, and interpret information, as well as collaborate with others to engage in authentic, real-world tasks. Most importantly, the students will develop the skills they need to compete in today’s 21st-century economy.

Mobile internet hotspots are also provided to students in need of internet access at home.

Through the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools (VILS) initiative, 18 HISD middle school (approx. 15,000 students) are also one-to-one. Click here for more information on the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools initiative. VILS partner school will receive an in-kind award of Chromebooks for all students, teachers, and administrators, professional development, and digital instructional resources. Each Chromebook is equipped with a data plan that provides “always-available” access outside of the classroom.
