GPS – Tearing Down Obstacles and Navigating College Admissions for McKinney Vento Students

  • HISD’s College Readiness - GPS “Graduates Preparing for Success” program is committed to ensuring that every McKinney Vento senior graduate is prepared for college, a career, and life! One such student, Class of 2022 graduate, recently connected with the GPS Program for guidance in pursuing his college career.  Utilizing an individualized advising approach in the span of 2-weeks, we were able to provide him with financial aid support, complete enrollment, as well as secure transportation and housing. In collaboration with other partner organizations and Angelo State University representatives, the student headed off to college on Friday, January 13, 2023! Additionally, we are pleased to announce that he is receiving the following:

     

    • Full tuition and room and board covered for the Spring 2023 semester
      • Awarded nearly $10,000 in grants and scholarships
      • Housing Waiver awarded in the amount of $5,700
    • Linen donations from the University of Houston
    • School Supplies and college apparel from College Readiness Department
    • Boost Mobile Cell Phone (in collaboration with HISD’s Student Assistance)
    • Tablet with internet access (in collaboration with HISD’s Student Assistance)
    • Health Insurance
    • Citizenship Renewal
    • Laptop
