Miles Ahead Scholars: An Overview
-
The MAS program is a unique academic and college-readiness honors program for Black and Latino males in the Houston Independent School District (HISD).
In 2019, Texas State Senator Borris Miles worked with Dr. Grenita Lathan, former HISD Interim Superintendent, to launch the Miles Ahead Scholar program in Wheatley, Worthing, and Kashmere High Schools. The Miles Ahead Scholars program was designed to support our lowest-performing schools in their efforts to move toward becoming
A-rated schools. The Miles Ahead Scholars program has developed a four-year program that provides AP academic courses, college counseling, community service, and exposure opportunities to ensure young men grades 9-12 are prepared for the college and career of their choice. Students in MAS achieve more because they are brought into a community of achievement that includes like-minded peers, dedicated instructors, and partners who create windows of opportunity. We currently have partnerships with Prairie View A&M University, NIKE, and VITOL.
Program Components
-
Academic Achievement
MAS hires its own teachers who teach core classes and lead academic camps for interventions and acceleration.
-
College and Academic Advising
Program Managers are staffed at each school to review grades, interests, extra-curricular opportunities, and college options. They provide coaching that will support students to Achieve MAS.
Exposure and Service Opportunities
-
The MAS program fosters student curiosity by exposing students to various events, service opportunities, and programs across the country.
